I finished in 1:31:03.  Sasha's race time predictor says 3:04 for St. George.  But this comes at the end of a peak mileage week, 70 miles with speed work.  I wonder if I have a shot at sub 3 at St.George?

I've been reading other race reports and wanting a break from lonely long runs.  But my wife works every other Saturday, leaving our weekends together packed.  Fitting in a race is tough.  However, yesterday I found a sitter for my kids, so I signed up for the Legacy Parkway 1/2.  This race is a fund raiser for the Hess Cancer Foundation.  A cancer survivor and Mr. Hess both gave great heart felt words of encouragement and appreciation.  I felt my race dollars went to a GREAT cause.

This is a nearly flat out and back on the Legacy Parkway.  The weather was a bit warm (~75 w/ 35% humidity at my finish).  8 to 9 mph head winds on the way back.

1 mile warm up, mainly to get my weekly miles in.  Then sat around waiting for the start.

1  6.56  166 bpm.  Speed is relative but, no fast runners showed up.  I was in 2nd.  Shins tight!

2  6.53  172  Mile 2 or 3 I was passed by the guy who I think went on to win.  Shins achy and tight!

3  6.54  174   About here I was chicked. Stayed with the chick till turn around.  Shins tight!

4  6.56  175  Shins starting to loosen up.

5  7.05  173  About here 2 more runners caught me and the chick.  Pack of 4 in 3rd place.  Shins getting better.

6  7.14  172  Overpass and sharp U turn around.  Lost the chick (she was the woman's winner)

7  7.09  172  3 of us ran astride for a few miles.

8  7.04  174  Finally could tuck in behind to draft a bit.

9  7.09  172  About here we dropped one of the 3 some. I was feeling strong thinking I could surge at mile 10 and maybe take 3rd.

10  7.08  172  Neck and neck, stride for stride two of us ran together.  Waiting to surge, starting to tire.

11  6.58  174  Still neck and neck.  Oscillating from ok, to pretty good, to I want to stop and take a nap.

12  6.57  175  Still neck and neck.  I can't pull away but I can keep up.  Legs beat!

13  6.36  180  Still stride for stride, neck and neck.  I really want to stop and lie down on the side of the road for a nice long nap.  I can see the finish, but I'm now running 5 to 10 seconds off my 5k PR pace in mile 13 of this race and mile 67 for the week.  My legs are tired and I am not enjoying myself.

13.?  180bpm.  With maybe 100 yards to go the bastard ;) next to me takes off like someone lit his shorts on fire.  There is no fire in my shorts and I can't find it in me to kick hard.  I'm kind of glad because now I give up any hope of 3rd and just finish. Course seemed almost .1 short.  1:31:03 (unofficial)

3.2 mile  cool down, 9.45 pace, 149 bpm.

1st in age group. Master's winner.  4th overall.

Great race. You really dug deep that last mile. I imagine it was really warm on the highway so you are definitely in shape for a sub3 at SGM.

LOVE your report! GREAT race and STRONG finish! WOW! You're amazing! I'm with Andy, the temp will be cooler, you will have tapered w/ fresh legs...YAH! Sub-3 at SGM is in the bag! CONGRATS on winning your AG and so close to placing 3rd overall!

Great race, Fly!!! Congrats on the hardware (medals? trophy? cash? handshake..) Very impressive, especially after such a long training week...month. To answer your question..sub 3:00 is well within your reach.

Great report..I'm in awe at how people can remember every mile of their races. It's all a big blur to me! Congrats! :)

Marc, When I say, "about here" it means give or take a mile.... or 13.1

Winner, winner chicken dinner! Yes you can totally go sub three with a taper you are golden!

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 30, 2009 at 15:12:55 from 71.219.64.200

After a week like that, I totally think sub-3 for St George. Imagine how you would have done yesterday if you were fully tapered and rested??

They had an article on this race in the paper today. I wonder of UHP will allow them to close it again for another race next year. We will see...

Great race Fly. Way to push to the end. And just think, you did that at the end of a high milage week. With fresh legs, you would have taken 3rd easily. Congrats on the Masters win!!!!

Very good job on that race Fly. You did some awesome pacing on a flat course. With the high mileage this week. With a great taper and the downhills at SG your going to be flying.:) Great job bro.

Congrats on the strong race. How did you like it? I was down there last week and saw it advertised and was wondering about it.

Good luck at St. George.

Not the most scenic course, but not bad.

It's flat and thus not as fast as local net down hill courses, but it's not "aided." I think the course was 6.5 miles out and back, making it 0.1 short.

The organization was fine. The race started 14 minutes late, no big deal.

They need to update their web page info on how to get to the starting line and include the info with your bib pick!

The 1/2 was chip timed. There was a notable lack of fast runners. For me this made it a fun race.

The Tee shirt was long sleeve and cotton. I have plenty of tech fabric race shirts. I find them not warm enough to run in the cold with but too warm to run in the heat with. I prefer cotton for casual use. So I have a slight preference for cotton race shirts.

All and all nothing notably negative to report.

I signed up the day before the race and that was pricey, BUT I felt my entry fee went to a good cause.

At the start we heard a few motivational words from a man who is in his 30s and was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. He's been through a lot but still did the bike ride.

After the race we heard from the man who started the Hess Cancer Foundation. The foundation helps pay funeral expenses for families in need that have lost young children to cancer. If you can read the stories on their web page and not at the very least get a lump in your throat then you probably aren't and shouldn't be a parent. http://www.hesscancer.org/kids_helped.php http://www.hesscancer.org/our_story.php

Thanks for all the great info on the race. I was tempted in doing this one. The one Duathlon I did was with the Hess Foundation. And was suprised to find out that I knew the wife of the man that started the foundation. I went to high school with her and even went to Junior Prom with her. But found out how they had lost there daughter to cancer along with her husband dealing with cancer. And one of there other kids. Along with alot of other stories. I was very suprised to hear all that her family had gone through. And just how she continued to with her husband be so strong. She has always been very positive but even more so now even after all those test they went through.

Great job again Fly and thanks for sharing your experience with us.

3:00 in St. George should be within shooting range assuming this course was not short, your fitness improves a bit, and you do not blow up.
