I'm very happy with my effort and time, heck(guess I've been in Utah a long time) I'm thrilled with both! But I did not go sub 3. My time was 3:01:48* This is a 7 minute PR and over an hour off of my first marathon time, 4:06 @ TOU 2004 and I trained hard for that 4:06. This was only my first attempt at sub 3 (I can't even remember how many tries it took me to BQ) and I think I'll have a good shot next year!

I had a great time today. Lots of smiling friendly faces at the campfire. Lots of sweaty runners after the finish line. To me both are a good thing. :D I looked for more friends at the finish but unfortunately only found a few, yes I did stick around.

I started with a strong effort and worked hard for every mile there after. I think aerobically I was good. But I think my biggest limiting factor today was leg strength. The last few miles I felt like I was running on stumps, tired stumps. And throughout the race I just couldn't keep my legs moving as fast as I wanted to even though my heart rate was kind of low. I started with the sub-3 pace group but just couldn't hang with them. I lost them before Veyo and ended up less than 3 minutes behind them.

*They had new chips this year and mine didn't work. Apparently you can not fold the loop flat against your shoe but need to leave a big floppy bow. Oh well now I know. The marathon took my Garmin time as both my chip and gun time and said they would verify it on the photos. Lucky for me this is one of the very few times I've remembered to stop my watch at the finish. I'm guessing my Garmin time was within a few seconds of what my chip time would have been. But I'm glad I wasn't a few seconds within a sub 3!

I was worried when I didn't see your time posted for awhile. Figured it was a chip error. You executed a great plan (I think the sub 3 group went out a little fast). Other than the pit stop and loss of power at the end you did everything you had to. You did great today and will definitely get sub 3. Congrats.

If you looked at how you finished your split times are not to far off from the beginning mile splits. This should give you confidence and encouragement. That something to walk away with, and be confident next time.

OH---I am glad you stopped your Garmin! They instructions said nothing about not pushing it flat, I pushed mine a little, too.

Nice job, that sub 3 will be very soon, I am sure! Wish I had met ya, we were there forever as our bags were on the last truck down, which arrived well after noon.

Fly!!!

Check out that sub 7 minute pace!! You are simply amazingly fast and amazing period!!!

I can't thank you enough for your kindness after the marathon. I have never experienced cramps like that. You helped me out tremendously. What would Smooth or I do without you? Seriously.

Thank you so so so much.

And I have to agree, your sub-3 is right around the corner!!! :)

A huge congrats on an incredible race!

Fly, a supreme pleasure to meet you and chat. You are closer than you think to that sub 3, and now that you can taste it you will devour it. Keep up the good effort. So glad I know you better now.

Hey, I was just thinking, were you in the medical corral with Teena and Paul??

From Matt on Tue, Oct 06, 2009 at 11:55:01 from 65.121.71.253

Congrats on a great race. I think the sub 3 is yours very quickly. You have certainley put in the work. I am glad to hear that the Garmin paid off those chips were the worst. I heard off a lot of people having problems and not liking them.

From Rhett on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 15:17:15 from 74.42.168.199

Wow Fly! It's amazing to look at all those miles in the 6's and see that you didn't quite make 3. It just goes to show how tough it is. You ran an awsome race though and are so so close to going sub 3. Congrats on the big PR. Are you going to join us in Boston this year? We can go for the sub 3 together.

From fly on the Wall on Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 18:38:49 from 168.179.215.132

Rhett, No Boston this year. We are going to Baja to pet whales instead.

From Rhett on Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 19:24:44 from 74.42.168.199

Petting whales in Baja sounds like fun. Just don't get your hands near their mouths.

From fly on the Wall on Thu, Oct 15, 2009 at 12:04:49 from 168.179.215.132

These are Gray Whales. They have baleen and no teeth.

"Off the coast of Baja, California, scientists find gray whales are uncharacteristically social with humans, even allowing their faces, mouths and tongues to be massaged as they bump up beside boats."
