Today I ran my first ultra.

The Buffalo Run was out on Antelope Island and the course was GORGEOUS! The course consisted of two loops, which were dumb-bell shaped.  You hit an aid station about every 5 miles.  The course went up, then down, then up, then down, and so on.  The climbs and descents were limited to about 700' of elevation gain or loss.  No sense posting splits as my pace was largely governed by the terrain.  My first loop took me about 2:23 and the second about 2:36.  I was dragging on the second loop but I also had to pass ton of 25k runners on single track.  My fastest and slowest miles were on the second loop, 6:39 for mile 23 and 11:46 for mile 25.  I was really, really ready to be done those last few miles but I wasn't nearly so wiped out after crossing the line as I was at St. George last fall.

Looking at my race times from last year I thought I might be around 5 hours, but my only goal was to finish upright, which would be a PR since I've never run this far!  My training was not great, but I wasn't trying to run fast.  I kept a good base (40-50ish miles/week) til February, then went on vacation for 2.5 weeks, running very little.  After vacation I ramped up to 50 some miles then did a 2 week taper.  I've done almost no speed work this year.  So, I'm thrilled to have eked in under 5 hours, but I'd have been happy no matter my time.

There were some amazing runners out on the course today.  The winner of the 50k finished in 3:48! I think.  I got to see Maynard/Brad cross the line (he did the 50k as well).  I also got to see some crazy 50 mile runner in a Twinkie shirt sprint like a madman across the finish!

Thanks Dale for coming out and cheering.  It was great to meet you and your son.

Well done, Mark. I think that you are meant to be an ultra runner. Glad you had a great time.

Congrats. This run will so help you in your remaining runs this year. I ran it last year. Totally missed being there. YOU RAN GREAT!! So much nicer on the body than a road marathon. You should be able to run normally on Monday. Enjoy your rest day.

We had a lot of fun hanging out and cheering you guys on. You looked really strong, even after mile 32. Very cool and impressive. Now I can't wait to do it next year

I had no idea that was your first ultra. To go under 5 hours on your first try is amazing. Today was a total day of firsts for a lot of people. Way to go. It was good seeing you today. We need to hit the BST sometime soon. It has to be in perfect condition.

Congratulations on being an ultra runner! That is an awesome time on that course. It was a gorgeous day out there, wasn't it?

Excellent race, especially since it was your first ultra. Nice job, Mark.

Uber congrats.

Glad you had such a good time for your first ultra. Now you're part of the dark side of running. You know, with all us other lunatics.

Teena, Thanks. Are you ready to try some trails? after Boston, of course.

Andy, Are you saying I'm crazier than the average marathoner? :)

JulieC, Thanks! I ran Monday, but it wasn't very normally.

Mr. Gardinero, Looks can be decieving. :) Next year I'll cheer you across the line.

Mark, Next year join Dale and me?

Twinkies, I'll say it again, your finish sprint was amazing!

Matt, Try it. You might like it!

Smooth, Thanks. I hope you are enjoying your taper.

Jun, You running the BST marathon? I just realized I'll be out of town. How about the Steeple Chase?

Maurine, It was a gorgeous day. Thank you for volunteering! I hope your tendons start behaving themselves.

Jon, Thanks. Based on your blog photo, I think I saw you out there somewhere. I had a blue and white pineapple print aloha shirt, if that rings a bell. Congratulations on 3rd place, even though you "have a long, long ways to go before I'm in racing shape." :)

Crockett, Thanks. Congratulations on your double 50 mile. Your are a mad man among mad men. :) How are you going to top that next year?

Paul, Uber thanks!

UltraJim, Thanks for the great race! I've told a few non-runners that I finished my first 50k and they all made some sort of "lunatic" comment.

From crockett on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 18:15:49 from 216.49.181.254

How do I top it? 3 loops, 150? No. I would love to try breaking 20 hours for a 100 there. Seems like the island would be a great place for a 100. But March is probably too early, too cold. Finishing rate would be pretty low and it would need a much longer volunteer commitment.

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 19:52:19 from 204.113.19.47

Cold is good. Much latter in spring and the bugs come out. The biting midges can be UNBEARABLE!!!!!!! I was there for a day last April and being outside was nothing short of sadistic! I'm scratching just thinking about it.

From timp on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 19:59:49 from 68.164.215.48

congrats on the first ultra! Sounds like you did a great job. It's fun trying to pass on single track isn't it? I can't wait to get out on the trails again...

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 23:21:35 from 166.70.192.189

Thanks Tim. At one point I guess I got a bit loopy, as I was trying to overtake and pass a lady I was saying on your left and the woman kept moving toward me. Finally she said, left or right? Then I realized I was on her right....

From Teena Marie on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 22:48:24 from 174.52.45.85

Now that's kinda funny! :)
