4.5 snow packed trail. As an attempt to get above the muck we started at Churchill Dr. Lower tower and back down to Jeremy's house. I would have like to run further, but good enough.

Tried to get above the mucky air. BST from Churchill Drive.  COLD but notable cleaner looking air.

BST Morris Meadows trail head. I hope I was mostly above the pollution. My water froze going down Dry Creek canyon :( Other wise OK. Would have liked to go further but I didn't want to run in the dark cause it was getting so cold!

Xtraining = skiing at Solitude. It was much warmer up on the mountain and the air was clean.  Driving back down the canyon was a bummer.  My son did fine on black diamond runs and is almost ready to ski anywhere on the mountain.

BST from Churchill Drive.  Air was maybe ok?  We were yelled at by the man in the giant red truck.  He didn't like us running by the construction site he was working at.  We didn't like the house that he was building smack dab on top of our trail head.

BST Deep snow.  It took me 2 hours to go 6 miles!  Planned to go further but I was cold and worked from slogging through the snow.  Beautiful though.

5° When I left, so I tried for more miles than degrees.  Warmer than 9.6 when I returned.

Downtown, Memory Grove, City Creek Canyon, BST, Lower Towers, home.  It was slow going in places with snow up to my crotch, but other trail sections were fairly well packed from snow shoes. I bundled up, including my ski mittens, and stayed warm enough.  Very beautiful outside and the air was cold but clean.

BST.  15° but the air was still breathable.  For now.  We are supposed to be in for the mother of all inversions.  :(

Speaking of inversions, I found this info on why indoor air quality is cleaner than outdoor during an inversion.  It is not related to furnace filters but air temperature!!

"Inside vs. Outside

The deal with our particulate is that so much of it is ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3). Ammonium nitrate happens to be volatile at warmer temperatures and stable at cold temperatures. In our case, the cold temperatures help to keep NH4NO3 as a particle, but once you go indoors the particulate tends to volatilize into it gas phase components. Therefore, indoor air quality is a whole lot better than outdoors. DAQ has done a fair bit of work on this very issue. They conducted numerous studies inside/outside schools. I think they may have worked at Hawthorne among others. Dr. Steve Packham at DAQ would be the contact on that.

Finnally a long run.  18 miles took me over 4 1/2 hours on snow packed trails.

Drove to Morris Meadows trail head to start above most of the bad air.  Took BST to Red Butte.  Up on the higher parts of the trail it was gorgeous!  Blue skies and much warmer temps.  Lower parts of the trail were still ok but a bit colder.  Most of the trail was in pretty good shape with snow packed firm and flat.  Some sections were a bit messy with punch throughs and slide offs.  I completely biffed only once.

I'm so sick and tired of this winter. I want a new one.

Morris Meadows trail head. Still above the bad air.

Three strikes and I'm out.

1. It's been raining most of the day but temps have been 20 to 28 in the valley. Not much worse than running in freezing rain.

2. The ground is covered with a rind of ice. Not much worse than running on an ice rink.

3. Despite the rain the air is still very polluted! Not much worse than running in dirty, stinking, polluted air.

1 + 2 + 3 = What could be worse than running today? Hmmm.... I'm just waiting for a plague of locusts to arrive. :(

Too warm in the mountains for good skiing and too cold in valleys for anything else. I wan't a new winter.

The good- Morris Meadows trail head was completely above the bad air and temps were above freezing.

The bad-  the warmer temps on the benches have turned the hard packed snow into sloppy mush.  It took me 3:30 hours to run 12 miles!!!! I think those may have been some of the hardest 12 miles I've ever run.  It was like trying to run on a Slurpee.

I carpooled with Jeremy to Jeremy Ranch road.  The valley was sopped in with dense freezing fog.  Up on the mountain it was partly cloudy and above freezing.  The road surface was hard packed snow and nice to run on.  A very beautiful route.
