BST.  15° but the air was still breathable.  For now.  We are supposed to be in for the mother of all inversions.  :(

Speaking of inversions, I found this info on why indoor air quality is cleaner than outdoor during an inversion.  It is not related to furnace filters but air temperature!!

"Inside vs. Outside

The deal with our particulate is that so much of it is ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3). Ammonium nitrate happens to be volatile at warmer temperatures and stable at cold temperatures. In our case, the cold temperatures help to keep NH4NO3 as a particle, but once you go indoors the particulate tends to volatilize into it gas phase components. Therefore, indoor air quality is a whole lot better than outdoors. DAQ has done a fair bit of work on this very issue. They conducted numerous studies inside/outside schools. I think they may have worked at Hawthorne among others. Dr. Steve Packham at DAQ would be the contact on that.

Google wasatch weather weenies for more good info

From fly on the Wall on Thu, Jan 17, 2013 at 10:18:28 from 168.180.63.58

Rhett, I check the air quality monitoring web page before I head out for a run. If it is bad, I drive to a trail head that is up and above the muck or if that wont work, I run inside on the dreadmill or just skip my run for the day.

Finnally a long run.  18 miles took me over 4 1/2 hours on snow packed trails.

Drove to Morris Meadows trail head to start above most of the bad air.  Took BST to Red Butte.  Up on the higher parts of the trail it was gorgeous!  Blue skies and much warmer temps.  Lower parts of the trail were still ok but a bit colder.  Most of the trail was in pretty good shape with snow packed firm and flat.  Some sections were a bit messy with punch throughs and slide offs.  I completely biffed only once.

At first I read, "some sections were a bit messy with punch ..." and I was wondering why there was punch on the trails!! Which then made me thirsty for some Hawaiian punch ... which I haven't had since grade school!!! WEIRD!!!! :) :) :)

Three strikes and I'm out.

1. It's been raining most of the day but temps have been 20 to 28 in the valley. Not much worse than running in freezing rain.

2. The ground is covered with a rind of ice. Not much worse than running on an ice rink.

3. Despite the rain the air is still very polluted! Not much worse than running in dirty, stinking, polluted air.

1 + 2 + 3 = What could be worse than running today? Hmmm.... I'm just waiting for a plague of locusts to arrive. :(

Too warm in the mountains for good skiing and too cold in valleys for anything else. I wan't a new winter.

The good- Morris Meadows trail head was completely above the bad air and temps were above freezing.

The bad-  the warmer temps on the benches have turned the hard packed snow into sloppy mush.  It took me 3:30 hours to run 12 miles!!!! I think those may have been some of the hardest 12 miles I've ever run.  It was like trying to run on a Slurpee.

This course was AMAZING!! Tons of beautiful scenery, fun running, a bit of route finding, and nice weather!  33k is a nice distance.  I haven't decided yet but I think this may be my new favorite race.  I started off conservative and had a good, strong finish.

There were some superstar, smoking fast runners on the course and some amazing times!  Mine certainly was not one of them but it was good enough for 8th of 74 in the 40-99 age group.

The only thing that was not great was a lack of food and drink at the finish line; water, Heed, and tasty soup but I could have really used at least some bread and something else to drink.  There was a beer garden and food truck for spectators but I did not run with my wallet, maybe that was a good thing.  There was a post race party that night with kegs and a limited amount of pizza.  This was nice but I knew no one and felt like an old man standing alone.  None of this negates how great the course was!

In the afternoon after the race, Sunday, and Monday I hiked in Arches with my family.  It was an all around enjoyable weekend.

Today was the Bonneville Shoreline Trail Marathon.  This is a great race.  No bibs, only 3 aid stations to mess with, roughly 7,000 feet of elevation gain, roughly 7,000 feet of elevation loss (according to Garmin so don't believe it),  and no entry fee (just bring food to share)!

Mileage wise I've not had any long runs since my last race in February!  Thus my plan going into this was to start slow, progress slowly, asses if I wan't to turn around at the ~10 mile aid station, finish slower.  I ran my plan, did not turn back, and finished without blowing up.

My time was roughly 30 minutes slower than last time I ran this race.  Fastest mile- 8:19.  Slowest mile- 22:32.  I had no real issues. The worst part was at mile 25.5 where after running downhill or rolling for quite a few miles there is a short uphill walker.  I knew it was coming and was worried about leg cramps.  A few steps into the ascent and wham, leg cramps.  However I was able to walk through them with just a few more steps and had no more issues.  All things considered I felt pretty good after the race.  It amazes that even with lacking training and on a grueling course like this, an easy effort made for a much more pleasant finish than a hard push at St. George.  I wonder how sore I will be tomorrow?

Next up is the Steeple Chase in June.  I really hope to train better for that but life is so busy right now.

Just my work's lunchtime 5k.  Our work shirts and such have a "DNR" logo, which sometimes worries me, but it doesn't stand for "do not resuscitate," rather Department of Natural Resources.  Regardless DNR is a nice name for a race.

The fast guy got a new job so wasn't there to break the tape.  It was hot- ~85°.  I paced with my lunchtime running buddy for the first 2.5ish miles then he fell off pace so I picked up the effort.  I did not push hard enough to feel really bad, but hard enough to be glad to finish.  Eventually a newer and younger employee is going to show up and kick the butts of us old and slow guys but til then I'll bask in my glory (yeah right) ;)

I love this race.  The course is tons of fun, is beautiful, and starts and ends less than a mile from my house.  I keep trying to talk people into running it and am mostly unsuccessful, but this year Teena and her husband gave it a go.  They both did great.  Hopefully she will post a report.

I'm not sure what to post about my race.  I ran smart.  I pushed myself and gave it a strong consistent effort without completely devastating myself. I finished faster than last year (last year I did the Slam and was on tired legs) but was 20 minutes slower than my course PR in 2009.  I guess maybe middle-age is slowing me down, that and not training as much or as fast.  I'm enjoying running, so I'll take the slowing times with a smile.

Ran out of time, only 4 miles.  100°.  I guess I'm getting used to the heat because it only felt like 90°.  I'm going to freeze next week.  We leave for a long road trip vacation to the northern California coast in a few hours.  Predicted highs in the low 60s with clouds and fog!

I guess I will do some sort of short and easy training for St. G survival when I get back.

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Jul 29, 2013 at 15:25:16 from 168.180.63.58

We got back last night. I didn't run much but I did run a little bit of the Lost Coast Trail and it was absolutely gorgeous!!!!

I'll update when I get a chance.

You must be killer busy trying to catch up at work. Just stopping by to see if you had updated anything.

Ry and I are toying with the idea of running the Jupiter Steeplechase in Park City this Saturday. (See ... he's not done with uphill trail races after all.)

You ever run it?

From Teena Marie on Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 15:37:06 from 65.130.8.28

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 16:46:48 from 168.180.63.58

It is good cross training, especially when done under the noon day sun. You should try it. Or not.

Ran home to get my orthotics.  Ran by our project house to pay the drywall guy.  Ran on the Jordan River Trail to have some lady invite me into her car.  I'm still puzzling over that last part.  Maybe she wasn't a lady?  She really looked like a lady.  Maybe she was a working lady?  She didn't ask for money.  Hmmmm....  Very wierd.  No way in hell I would get in the car!

Hi Fly. How's life treating you? Are you still billy goating it around the mountain trails by your home?

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Oct 28, 2013 at 13:08:42 from 168.180.63.58

Hi Rhett. I ran St. G and BQed, but only because of my advanced age! I've been running since but most all of my time is spent trying to finish a house project. I'm motivated to finish that monstrous project so I can return to the trails and generally spend more time enjoying life.

From Rhett on Mon, Oct 28, 2013 at 13:23:45 from 24.121.0.8

Congrats on the BQ Fly! That's great. What was your time? Are you going to do Boston in 2014? Good luck with the house. If it is anything like mine, it is a never ending project.

Good on ya Fly! Wish my slowest race was a 3:23: , That BQ at SGM will be good for 2015 @ Boston ? Are you in the 2014 Boston as well? Are you going to post a race report for that St. Geo Mary?

Working feverishly away on a rental house. Only running at lunch during the week. Ready to be done with the house. Wanting to ski.

I will eventually update my blog.... and sign up for a race. At this point I'm thinking BoSho may be my next marathon.

From what I remember it was a good race.  I BQed but only because I got older.  I didn't push supper hard but the finish still hurt, maybe not as bad as other years but it still hurt.
